The Manchester Public School Grade 5/6 class were given an assignment to write persuasive letters to government officials on a community issue they were concerned about. Three students wrote to the City of Cambridge about their safety concerns with an inaccessible median at the Dundas Beverly intersection. On March 19th, the Mayor of Cambridge surprised the students with a classroom visit. He announced that the city will be working with the region to get the median repaired and updated before the beginning on the new school year in September. This median was not scheduled to be repaired until 2021, but the students’ letter convinced council to move up the date.
We are so proud of our students who are making a difference to improve their neighbourhood. We think this is a great example of our students, staff and community collaborating and problem-solving. Here is a video of two of the students who led this positive change.
